After reaching NATO's underground bunker in Brussels, Agnes Rodriguez and Angie Chen prepare for the day. In the locker room, Agnes asserts her authority over Ensign Vitos before heading to the colossal hangar. Among the Nauvoo-class vessels housed there, the USS Mercator has been their assignment for several years. There, they inspect the site, between weekend accidents, security routines, and the vast spaces where the vessels of the Special Fleet stand.

TL;DR

Agnes and Angie continue inspecting the Mercator, observing modules, nacelles, and technical details that have never yet been used on mission.

Story

I start walking again, Angie naturally falling into step beside me. Together, we inspect the exterior of the USS Mercator, taking in every detail of its design and structure.

The Mercator is instantly recognizable by its forward saucer. Its curved surface resembles a crescent moon, concave toward the rear and convex toward the front.

The command bridge sits at the center of the saucer. Through the dome, I can make out the silhouettes of officers already at their stations.

As we move along, Angie notes any maintenance work that may be needed on her pad. We take a ramp down to the lower level, where the angular structures built into the hull become even more striking.

They run along the flanks, central section, and rear of the ship, giving the Mercator a rugged, industrial look. Every angle feels deliberate, calculated, part of what makes this ship so distinctive.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Agnes, we'll need to send a team to take a closer look at the module separation mechanism.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

I see it. Looks like they're out of alignment.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Maybe. Could just be the angle. We can't tell from here.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Could it cause a problem?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Probably not. But if any of the parts are bent, it could make separation more difficult.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Do what you need to do. You've got my go-ahead.

Angie's meticulous. She spots details I might never have noticed. There's a reason she's my first officer.

Those modules are designed to detach from the ship and land on their own. The Mercator is primarily a transport and cargo vessel, and that modular design makes it incredibly versatile.

We finally reach the far end of the hangar, where a cargo lift is waiting to take us up to the warp nacelles.

Charly

Morning, Captain. Morning, Commander. Taking you up as usual?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Morning, Charly. Yes, as usual. I assume the nacelles are still there?

Charly

Yes, Commander. Still there... still gathering dust.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

One day, you'll see. One day, this bird will fly, Charly.

Agnes and Angie arrive near the freight elevator and are greeted by Charly.

Listening to them, I can hear the frustration in their voices. The Mercator, like most ships in NATO's fleet, has never left its hangar.

Its components were built in factories scattered across Alliance territory, then shipped to the bunkers for final assembly. Only a handful of ships have ever taken to the air, flown in remote areas during highly classified exercises.

I've been in command of the Mercator for seven years now, and all that time, I've been captain of a ship that never leaves the dock.

And honestly? The thought of one day receiving the order to launch scares me.

Because if that day ever comes, it'll mean the conflict has crossed a line we can never uncross.

Charly

Here we are, ladies.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Thanks for the ride, Charly. Have a good one. Take care of yourself.

Charly

You too, Commander.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

He's charming, isn't he? What do you think, Agnes?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Hmm? Sorry, what?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

You're distracted again.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Yes and no. I was looking at the warp nacelles.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Beautiful, aren't they? At full power, they could get you to Mars in eight minutes.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

I know. I went through the same training you did.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Don't make that face. You'll make it to the stars one day. We'll explore the solar system together... maybe even beyond.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Did you remember the nacelles' quarterly test run?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

I scheduled it for Wednesday.

All I need now is the admiral's signature authorizing an engine run inside the hangar.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

You'll get it later today.
