Story

After that exterior inspection of the Mercator, we head back down a staircase leading near the vessel's access ramp. We cross it, then enter on the starboard side through the large door: the shuttle bay.

We have barely crossed the threshold when a lieutenant steps toward us, focused expression, quick stride.

Lt. Maestria

Hello, Captain Rodriguez. Hello, Commander Chen.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Hello, Lieutenant.

Lt. Maestria

Commander Chen, we have completed the modifications you requested. Would you like to see?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Really? You actually did it?

Lt. Maestria

Yes, yes, Commander Chen. It's over there. Follow me.

It was difficult to recalibrate the printing machines, but I believe we managed to obtain the ideal dimensions... as well as the right color.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

I have no doubt about your abilities, Lieutenant. You and your team have an excellent reputation for craftsmanship in this area.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Angie, would you mind explaining to me what's going on with this lieutenant?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Nothing too terrible, Agnes. Come on, let's follow him.

Angie's smile says a lot. With her, I can expect the worst as easily as the best. I still stay positive when I see her amused, despite the current circumstances.

I follow them through the shuttle bay, glancing around me. On the ceiling, I even spot a few cobwebs. Charly was not exaggerating when he said this vessel was gathering dust.

We approach a class F shuttle. Angie and the lieutenant stop in front of it.

Lt. Maestria

There, Commander Chen. We followed your instructions to the letter.

I watch the two of them, trying to understand what this could possibly be about. Then my gaze lands on the forward flank of the shuttle.

And there, it takes all my willpower not to burst out laughing like an unhinged hyena.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

No... seriously, Angie! Tell me you didn't ask them to do that?

In the shuttle bay of the USS Mercator, a lieutenant presents the class F shuttle "Herbie 53" to Angie Chen, while Agnes Rodriguez observes its new registry.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Yes, yes, I dared. She's way too cool, right?

Lt. Maestria

Captain Rodriguez, I only followed Commander Chen's orders.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

No harm done, Lieutenant.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Hee hee hee.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Herbie 53!!!

You could have chosen a name a little less... uh... how do I put this... folkloric.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

It was my choice. Let me remind you that as commander and first officer of this vessel, I have the authority to change the names and registry numbers of the shuttles as I see fit, without having to ask your opinion.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

That's true. But next time, choose a slightly more serious name.

And while we're talking surprises, should I expect Mickey Mouse's lawyers to show up over a plagiarism issue?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Uh, I hadn't thought of that.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Yeah, right!

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

You are dismissed, Lieutenant. And thank you for the time you devoted to this masterpiece.

Lt. Maestria

Thank you, Commander Chen.

We resume our walk and leave the bay, with Herbie 53 behind us. I glance sideways at Angie. She will always surprise me with her ability to change moods in the snap of a finger.

In the corridors, officers go about their business, greeting one another with a nod or exchanging a few words. The atmosphere is calm, typical of an ordinary Monday morning aboard the vessel.

Suddenly, a crash echoes at the end of the corridor. Hurried footsteps. Hasty apologies. The officers turn around, slightly jostled by an ensign who bursts through at a run, body hunched, hands firmly pressed in front of her crotch.

I narrow my eyes, watching that frantic sprint.

Rushed Ensign

Sorry... uh... sorry... Excuse me... please, let me through... it's urgent...

She finally reaches our level and, between two panting breaths, still finds time to greet us with a quick:

Rushed Ensign

Mornin', Cap'n... Com'der...

Then she immediately moves away, leaving a trail of bewilderment behind her.

Ensign Emilie Flores rushing through the corridors at full speed.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Hey, Flores! What's going on?

Ens. Emilie Flores

No time, Com'der... sorry... urgent need...

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Flores! The ladies' restroom is on the right!

We rush toward the room on the left, the one the ensign disappeared into. We have barely crossed the door before we freeze, mouths open at the scene.

With undisguised astonishment, we discover her standing there, pants lowered to her ankles, facing a urinal, peeing.

I immediately head to the sink, tear off a piece of toilet paper, and hand it to her.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Thank you, Captain,

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

You came close to disaster, Flores. For a moment I thought the Mercator was going to turn into an aquarium.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Sorry, Commander. I don't know the vessel very well yet. I didn't have time to wait anymore... I had to improvise.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Now you know these are the men's restrooms. In the future, try to take care of things before starting your shift.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Yes, Commander. That's what I usually do, but today I was delayed because of the SonicShuttle, which got stuck at Luxembourg Station.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Don't justify yourself, Flores. Pull your pants up before someone sees your little butt, and return to your post on the bridge as soon as possible.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Aye, Commander!

Ensign Emilie Flores being lectured by Commander Chen.

We leave the men's restroom and resume our route as if nothing had happened.

If you are wondering what the SonicShuttle is, it is a vehicle capable of traveling at the speed of sound through the underground AspiroTube network, which connects all the Alliance bunkers to one another. A system mainly used for freight and personnel transport, inspired by the Hyperloop imagined by Elon Musk several years ago.

Personally, I have never taken it. I much prefer my dear Ducati.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Do you think the transport was really down this morning?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Probably. I don't have any information on that. And besides, it isn't our field. Emilie isn't the kind of girl to tell tall tales. I tend to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

You should never have recruited that officer.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Why do you say that?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

She's too young, immature, and always trying to justify herself. Her reaction this morning proved it again.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

True, she's only nineteen, but she already has a resume a mile long. We won't find anyone better than her in cryptography and secure data decryption. MI6 trusted her, and so do I.

Give her time to find her footing. After all, she has only been here for a week... and besides, she reminds me of a certain Angie.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Yes... you may be right.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Look on the bright side. Who knows? Maybe one day she can teach you how to pee standing up in an emergency.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Ha ha! That one really isn't funny.
