Story

After finishing our exterior inspection of the Mercator, we head down a staircase toward the ship’s access ramp. We cross it and enter through the large starboard door into the shuttle bay.

We’ve barely stepped inside when a lieutenant approaches us, looking focused and moving quickly.

Lt. Maestria

Hello, Captain Rodriguez. Hello, Commander Chen.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Hello, Lieutenant.

Lt. Maestria

Commander Chen, we have completed the modifications you requested. Would you like to see?

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Really? You actually did it?

Lt. Maestria

Yes, Commander Chen. It’s right over here. Follow me.

Recalibrating the printers was tricky, but I think we managed to get the size just right... and the color too.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

I never doubted you, Lieutenant. You and your team have quite a reputation for this kind of work.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Angie, care to tell me what’s going on with this lieutenant?

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Nothing too terrible, Agnes. Come on, let's follow him.

Angie’s smile says it all. With her, I never know whether to expect the best or the worst. Still, seeing her amused is reassuring, especially with everything going on.

I follow them through the shuttle bay, looking around as we go. I even spot a few cobwebs overhead. Charly wasn’t exaggerating when he said this ship was gathering dust.

We approach a class F shuttle. Angie and the lieutenant stop in front of it.

Lt. Maestria

There, Commander Chen. We followed your instructions to the letter.

I watch the two of them, trying to figure out what this is all about. Then my eyes land on the front side of the shuttle.

And suddenly, it takes every ounce of self-control not to cackle like a deranged hyena.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

No... seriously, Angie! Tell me you didn't ask them to do that?

In the shuttle bay of the USS Mercator, a lieutenant presents the class F shuttle "Herbie 53" to Angie Chen, while Agnes Rodriguez observes its new registry.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Oh yes, I did. She’s awesome, isn’t she?

Lt. Maestria

Captain Rodriguez, I only followed Commander Chen's orders.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

No harm done, Lieutenant.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Hee hee hee.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Herbie 53!!!

You could’ve picked something a little less... uh... how do I put this... ridiculous.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

It was my choice. And as commander and first officer of this ship, I’m allowed to rename the shuttles and change their registry numbers without asking your permission.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

That’s true. But next time, pick something a little more serious.

And while we’re on the subject of surprises, should I expect Mickey Mouse’s lawyers to come after us for copyright infringement?

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Uh, I hadn't thought of that.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Yeah, right!

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

That’ll be all, Lieutenant. And thank you for all the time you put into this masterpiece.

Lt. Maestria

Thank you, Commander Chen.

We resume our walk and leave the bay, with Herbie 53 behind us. I glance sideways at Angie. She will always surprise me with her ability to change moods in the snap of a finger.

In the corridors, officers go about their business, greeting one another with a nod or exchanging a few words. The atmosphere is calm, typical of an ordinary Monday morning aboard the vessel.

Suddenly, a crash echoes from the far end of the corridor. Hurried footsteps. Breathless apologies. Officers turn as an ensign comes charging through, bumping into people, body hunched and both hands clamped over her crotch.

I narrow my eyes and watch her frantic dash.

Rushed Ensign

Sorry... uh... sorry... Excuse me... please, let me through... it's urgent...

She finally reaches our level and, between two panting breaths, still finds time to greet us with a quick:

Rushed Ensign

Mornin', Cap'n... Com'der...

Then she immediately moves away, leaving a trail of bewilderment behind her.

Ensign Emilie Flores rushing through the corridors at full speed.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Hey, Flores! What's going on?

Ens. Emilie Flores

No time, Com’der... sorry... gotta go...

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Flores! The ladies' restroom is on the right!

We rush into the room on the left, the one the ensign just disappeared into. The moment we step through the door, we freeze, staring open-mouthed at the scene.

There she is, standing in front of a urinal with her pants around her ankles, peeing as if this were perfectly normal.

I immediately head for the sink, tear off some toilet paper, and hand it to her.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Thank you, Captain,

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

That was a close one, Flores. For a second, I thought you were going to turn the Mercator into an aquarium.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Sorry, Commander. I don't know the vessel very well yet. I didn't have time to wait anymore... I had to improvise.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Now you know where the men’s room is. Next time, try to take care of this before your shift starts.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Yes, Commander. That's what I usually do, but today I was delayed because of the SonicShuttle, which got stuck at Luxembourg Station.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Enough excuses, Flores. Pull your pants up before someone sees your bare backside, then report to your station on the bridge as soon as possible.

Ens. Emilie Flores

Yes, Commander!

Ensign Emilie Flores being lectured by Commander Chen.

We leave the men's restroom and resume our route as if nothing had happened.

In case you’re wondering, the SonicShuttle is a vehicle that travels at the speed of sound through the underground AspiroTube network, linking every Alliance bunker. The system is mainly used to transport freight and personnel and was inspired by Elon Musk’s Hyperloop concept.

Personally, I’ve never used it. I’ll take my beloved Ducati any day.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Do you think the transport was really down this morning?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Probably. I haven’t heard anything about it, but transportation isn’t our department. Emilie isn’t the type to make up ridiculous excuses. I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

You never should’ve recruited her.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Why do you say that?

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

She's too young, immature, and always trying to justify herself. Her reaction this morning proved it again.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Sure, she’s only nineteen, but her résumé is already a mile long. We won’t find anyone better at cryptography or decrypting secure data. MI6 trusted her, and so do I.

Give her time to settle in. She’s only been here a week... and besides, she reminds me of a certain young Angie.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Yes... you may be right.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Look on the bright side. Who knows? Maybe one day she’ll teach you how to pee standing up—for emergencies.

Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One

Ha ha. Very funny.
