After the nuclear impact, the Mercator came close to destruction. Rodriguez and Corda tore the vessel free from the atomic mushroom cloud through a desperate maneuver, and the crew managed to stabilize the craft in low orbit. But Commander Angie Chen, who remained in Module 3, is still missing, and the vessel's systems are severely damaged.

TL;DR

In Module 3, Agnes discovers a thousand passengers in agony after the life-support system fails. She manages to revive Angie at the last possible moment, while Manu proves unexpectedly helpful, and embarrassingly talkative. Across the rest of the Mercator, tensions rise: riots in the modules and a crew on the edge of exhaustion. The vessel is now in survival mode.

Story

As soon as we enter the airlock, a strange sensation passes through me. The air is colder than in the rest of the vessel, heavy with a metallic, slightly stale smell, like a space that has remained hermetically sealed for too long. Goosebumps rise along my arms under the bite of this sudden chill, a brutal contrast with the damp heat of my body after all that effort.

My sports bra is soaked with sweat, stuck to my skin. I do not know whether it is adrenaline or exhaustion, but my muscles feel both clenched and drained.

Suddenly, the walkie-talkie clipped to my belt spits out a burst of static that makes me jump.

[Static]... Rodriguez, do you read me?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

I read you, Flores.

Go ahead.

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

Audio via walkie-talkies

The link with engineering... [static]... is restored.

The engineers... [static]... are gradually reactivating the... [static]... but we have... [static]... a new problem.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

I'm receiving you very poorly, Flores.

Did you say there is a problem?

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

Audio via walkie-talkies

Riots... [static]... starboard side, in modules... [static]... five, six, and seven.

Security teams... [static]... are struggling to contain them.

What should we do, Captain?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Flores, did you say riots in modules five, six, and seven?

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

Audio via walkie-talkies

Affirmative, Captain.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Maintain the lockdown on all modules except Module 3.

Apply non-lethal measure 1.1 in the affected sectors. Do you understand, Flores?

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

Audio via walkie-talkies

I don't know... [static]... that measure, Captain.

Do you mean the anesthetics?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Inject light anesthetic substances into the ventilation of the affected modules.

Temporary sedation. No lasting effect.

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

Audio via walkie-talkies

Understood, Captain.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Wait, Flores!

Once you regain control of the bridge, send a distress signal toward the Moon.

And launch surveillance probes around the vessel.

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

... [static] ...

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Damn static...

I'll call her back later.

No time to fight with the radio. I clip the walkie back to my belt and turn toward Manu.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Are you ready, Manu?

We're going to open the module's second airlock.

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

Hey... why are you sending a distress signal toward the Moon?

There's nobody there. Rescue is on Earth, right?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

No, Manu.

There is no one left on Earth with the means to rescue us.

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

Agnes... look through the airlock window!

Open it, quick!

Agnes and Manu observe the inside of Module 3 through the window.

Through the window, a chilling vision hits me full force.

Silhouettes lie directly on the floor, piled against one another in a disturbing stillness.

A shiver runs up my spine.

I seize the control panel and type in my access code without thinking.

The bay opens with a metallic click, revealing the scale of the disaster.

The air is heavy, saturated with humidity and the flat smell of confinement.

The silence is almost total, broken only by a few muffled groans.

I move forward carefully, my gaze sliding over these motionless bodies.

I bend over one of them and press my fingers against his neck.

A weak pulse.

Barely perceptible.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Manu, my access code is 55-2730-911-327.

Go down to the lower levels immediately and open every airlock.

The life-support system has failed in this module.

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

You said 55-2730-911-327, right?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Yes, Manu. That's correct.

As soon as it's done, you go back into the vessel and requisition every able-bodied person: officers, medics, civilians.

Bring them back here.

Run. And don't lose a second.

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

All right, Agnes.

I'll remember...

55-2730-911-327.

55-2730-911-327.

55-2730-911-327...

I already see him disappear down the corridor when I grab the walkie.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Flores, this is Rodriguez. Do you read me?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

[Censored]

Unable to reach the bridge, I head toward the cockpit.

If Angie is still alive, that is where I will find her.

And that is also where I will be able to restart the module's life-support system.

I have to act fast, because there are more than a thousand passengers here... and part of my crew.

The door is ajar.

I force it open by sliding it sideways and enter the cockpit.

Angie is there. Unconscious. Slumped in her seat, facing a console gutted by the beam that collapsed.

On the left, I tear away a panel concealing the emergency activation for life support.

I grab the lever and turn it all the way.

A mechanical breath starts up. Ventilation restarts.

Agnes discovers Angie's body in the cockpit of Module 3.

I do not waste a second. I rush to Angie and slide her onto the floor. No reaction.

I press my ear near her mouth. No breathing.

I take her wrist, searching for a pulse. Nothing.

For an instant, fear threatens to overwhelm me. I push it back.

I tear her sweater open with a sharp motion and immediately position myself.

My hands settle at the center of her chest.

I begin compressions.

Hard. Steady. Again. And again.

Thirty compressions.

Then I breathe air into her lungs.

I start again. Compressions. Breaths.

Time no longer exists.

Then suddenly, a gasp of air. A cough. A tremor. I stop dead.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

My God... Angie.

You're alive.

I really thought I'd lost you.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Cough... cough...

Not... this time, my love...

Cough...

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Easy. Breathe slowly, Angie.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Cough...

Are we back?

Did the operation... succeed?

Cough...

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Breathe.

We're not done yet.

There is still a lot to do, and this time... I really need you.

But first, catch your breath. Slowly.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

You know very well that you... cough...

that you're going to have to put up with me again... cough...

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

You still have your sense of humor. That's something.

I barely have time to savor this fragile relief before Manu's voice cuts through the silence and brutally brings me back to reality.

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

Agnes! Agnes! I'm back!

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Great, Manu!

Did you bring people?

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

Yes! Officers and civilians are already treating passengers in the module.

Hello, Commander Chen.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Hello, Manu...

You know the captain???

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

Oh, absolutely, Commander.

We met in the showers.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

In... the showers???

Care to explain, Agnes???

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Uh... yes.

But it's a long story.

Manu (Requisitioned Civilian)

Well, actually, it's simple.

She showed up completely naked, head to toe, in the lower-deck showers, and pretended to be a regular officer...

... You have to admit that without her bath towel, our Captain Rodriguez is pretty damn hot.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Manu.

Shut up.
