Story
After crossing the length of the ship, we stop in front of the elevator leading to the command bridge. A soft chime echoes through the corridor before the doors slide open.
I press the button for the top deck. The doors close behind us, and the elevator begins its ascent.
During the ride, silence settles between us. Angie slips her hand into mine, our fingers intertwining as naturally as breathing. It's a ritual I both love and hate.
I hate it because every instinct tells me to pull her into my arms.
I love it because it reminds me that, no matter what happens next, I'm not facing it alone.
Another chime announces our arrival.
The doors glide open onto the bridge.
A wide circular room stretches out before us, lined with consoles and displays. Beeps, whistles and quiet voices blend into a familiar symphony—the unmistakable sound of a ship ready for duty.
At the front, two helm stations face the main viewscreen. At the center sits the captain's chair.
My chair.
From there, I can take in every station with a single glance.
Angie steps onto the bridge beside me and instantly straightens into a formal stance.
Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One
Captain on the bridge!
I never tire of that instant when the officers present stand and snap to attention.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
At ease!
Good morning, everyone. I hope you had a good weekend. I see my chair is still here.
Let's do a quick check.
Lieutenant Commander Corda, at the helm. You are present.
Ensign Emilie Flores, at communications. We already crossed paths this morning... in the men's restroom.
Mister Corda, I saw you snickering. Do not interrupt me, please.
Lt. Cmdr. Eric Corda Pilot
Sorry, Captain.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
At operations, Lieutenant Savea.
Charlene Savea isn't here?
Ens. Emilie Flores Communications
Captain, the AspiroTube network was hit by a Russian cyberattack this morning. Traffic was interrupted on part of the network.
Lieutenant Savea was supposed to take the SonicShuttle from Montreal and should arrive shortly.
Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One
How do you know that, Ensign Flores?
Ens. Emilie Flores Communications
This morning, I was stuck in Luxembourg. I intercepted the server communications with my smartphone. That is how I gained access to this information.
Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One
Intercepted?
Ens. Emilie Flores Communications
Yes, Commander. When I was at MI6, the AspiroTube network's communication system was part of the training program. I also helped improve its efficiency.
So I also know its weaknesses, which allowed me to obtain this secure information about the state of the network.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
See, Number One? Our little genius is something else.
Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One
I'll give her that. Ensign Emilie Flores is full of surprises.
At that moment, the elevator doors open. My gaze immediately turns in that direction.
Lieutenant Savea enters.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Good morning, Charlene. We were waiting for you.
Lt. Charlene Savea Operations
I apologize for being late, Captain.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Don't bother explaining. Emilie has already found you an excuse.
Lt. Charlene Savea Operations
Uh... you know about the AspiroTube?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Yes, Lieutenant. The operations console is waiting for you. Take your seat.
Lt. Charlene Savea Operations
Yes, Captain.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Since everyone arrived late, I am giving you ten more minutes to compile your sections' daily reports.
Get to work, and make it quick!
Every Monday, it's the same story. We're never on time. I was supposed to report to the admiral at nine, and it's almost eleven already.
I'll probably get another one of his endless lectures, but I don't really care. What matters is that we're operational.
Meanwhile, Angie goes from officer to officer, handing out those blasted reports that keep wasting our precious time.
Cmdr. Angie Chen Number One
I've sent today's reports to your pad, Captain. All you need to do now is sign them.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Thank you, Number One. You have the bridge while I'm with the admiral.
