As nuclear war breaks out on Earth, Captain Agnes Rodriguez and her first officer Angie Chen manage to evacuate thousands of civilians aboard the USS Mercator. Badly damaged, the vessel nevertheless succeeds in leaving the atmosphere and placing itself on a trajectory toward the Moon. With resources exhausted and systems in agony, the crew forces most passengers into sleep to save energy. On the verge of collapse, the Mercator finally receives an answer from NATO's starbase, which dispatches an escort to dock it safely.

TL;DR

The Mercator is finally saved and docked at the starbase. The refugees and crew are taken in by the rescue teams, while Agnes and Angie are transferred to intensive care. After 48 hours of forced rest, Admiral Michaux visits them and demands a debriefing. A flashback reveals why Angie holds such a deep grudge against him: nine years earlier, he had removed her from consideration for a prestigious post on the starbase, an affront she never swallowed.

Story

Docked at the NATO starbase, the Mercator is now firmly attached to the access ramps of dock A.

The rescue teams deploy quickly aboard and begin taking care of the refugees... then my crew.

On the bridge, the lighting suddenly comes back. As if by magic.

I take a few seconds to realize this is not a last surge from the vessel.

It is real.

I turn toward Charlene, Eric, and Emilie. Three days without sleep. Three days holding the impossible together.

I feel the need to say it.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Ladies... sir...

It would seem we have power again.

I advise you to take the elevator while it still works.

It is time to put yourselves in our hosts' hands.

And...

Thank you. Sincerely. For everything you have done.

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

Thank you, Captain.

Are you not coming with us?

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

No, Emilie. We will see each other later.

It is tradition. The captain is always the last to leave their ship.

My officers pass in front of me one after another.

A nod. A look. Nothing more. Nothing necessary.

They disappear into the elevator.

When the doors close, only Angie and I remain.

I stay seated in my chair, suddenly drained of all energy.

Angie approaches without a word, settles onto my lap, and wraps her arms around me. She rests her head against my shoulder.

I hold her in turn.

For the first time in a long time... I have nothing left to decide.

Nothing left to anticipate. Nothing left to contain.

In that silent embrace, the tension finally gives way.

And we fall asleep. Together.

Angie joins Agnes on the captain's chair, and they fall asleep.

A few minutes later, a rescue team finds us on the bridge.

We are evacuated to a room on the starbase, where we finally receive the care we need.

Forty-eight hours pass.

When I open my eyes, a silhouette is standing in front of my bed.

Adm. Anthony Michaux

Aaaaah...

Rodriguez. Our heroic sleepyhead finally wakes up.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Hmm... m'rning, Adm'ral Michaux...

Adm. Anthony Michaux

I see you still remember me.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Yes.

Hard to forget you.

It has been... nine years, I think.

Adm. Anthony Michaux

That is correct.

The last time we saw each other, you told me where to shove it.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Uh... yes.

But you know very well why, Admiral.

Adm. Anthony Michaux

Oh, I do not hold it against you.

Especially after what you just accomplished.

Facing down an atomic mushroom cloud... then crossing space with a vessel absolutely not prepared for it.

That takes a hell of a pair between your legs.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Uh...

You are still as delicate as ever, Admiral.

Adm. Anthony Michaux

I am trying to make an effort. But do not count on it too much.

I will let you rest until Monday morning.

You and Chen will be expected in my office first thing.

Full debriefing.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

Thank you, Admiral.

See you Monday.

When Agnes wakes up on the NATO starbase, she is greeted by Admiral Michaux.

The admiral leaves the room.

I lift my head slightly and let my gaze move across the room.

Angie is lying in the second bed. Eyes closed. Breathing steady.

She is asleep.

Well... apparently.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

In a low voice

Hey... Angie.

Are you asleep?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

What an asshole.

No.

I was pretending, so he would not talk to me.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

In a low voice

You heard everything?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Yes.

He will never change.

And believe it or not, he really wanted to see us in person.

He has come by the room six times in the last twenty-four hours.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

In a low voice

And you... obviously, you pretended to sleep?

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

Obviously.

What do you think?

Honestly, I just want to punch him in the face.

Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez

In a low voice

Do not get carried away.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.

Let us wait until Monday. We will see what he really wants.

Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)

I am not getting carried away.

I am holding myself back.

In the starbase room, Angie is exasperated by Admiral Michaux's behavior and makes it known to Agnes.

And now, dear readers, I can see where your minds are going.

You are probably wondering why Angie holds such a stubborn grudge against Admiral Michaux.

So we may as well clear things up right away.

Let us go back nine years.

At the time, Angie and I were colonels in the Air Force.

At the same time, we were following intensive training programs to join NATO's Special Fleet, which was recruiting as fast as it could.

We met all the requirements.

Too well, even.

Our names were added to the list of potential candidates for several sensitive assignments.

Including a post within the starbase.

And, above all... one aboard the future Enterprise, still under construction.

The trials followed one after another.

We passed them brilliantly.

Then, at the very last minute, the ax fell.

Angie was removed from consideration.

Official reason: too impulsive. Too immature.

A judgment signed by Admiral Michaux himself.

For Angie, it was a shock.

A real one.

As for me...

Rather than accept a promotion alone, I refused advancement.

We returned to Earth together.

A few years later, Admiral Hamilton entrusted us with command of the Mercator, buried in the bunker beneath Brussels.

The rest...

You know it.
