Agnes V. Rodriguez, captain in the Special Fleet, and her first officer Angie Chen command the USS Mercator, a NATO transport ship based in a bunker in Brussels. During the Alliance's annual summit in the European capital, a global crisis degenerates into a massive offensive: Russian attacks and the appearance of an unidentified vessel. The Mercator evacuates thousands of civilians and heads of state, sustaining heavy damage. Faced with exhausted resources, the crew forces a large portion of the passengers into sleep and decides on a perilous transit to the Moon. Despite heavy human losses and ethical dilemmas, the vessel manages to contact NATO's starbase and is towed in for docking.

TL;DR
During the debriefing, Admiral Michaux congratulates Agnes for her exploits but reminds her of her protocol violations, which could carry severe sanctions. Against all expectations, he offers her command of the USS Enterprise, with Angie as first officer, believing she has proven her worth. Agnes accepts on condition that she bring officers Corda, Savea, Flores, and Vitos with her. The Mercator, meanwhile, will be dismantled. A new chapter opens: command of the Special Fleet's flagship, but under the threat of visible enemies... and imminent lawsuits.
Story
After a surprisingly peaceful weekend spent in our room — talking, finding our footing again... and writing our mission reports — Angie and I finally answer Admiral Michaux's summons.
In the corridor leading to his office, I take Angie aside and ask her to restrain herself.
She knows it is not worth reopening old quarrels. Not today.
Especially now that Michaux is officially our superior officer.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Rodriguez. Chen.
Good morning. Have a seat.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Good morning, Admiral.
Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)
Mornin'.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Let us begin without delay, if you do not mind.
I have read your reports carefully.
The Mercator's logs.
As well as all data related to your mission since last Monday's Russian attack.
Final assessment:
You brought back all the Alliance heads of state alive.
You lost seven members of your crew.
You scanned ten thousand seven hundred twenty-five refugees... of whom one hundred seventy-one did not survive.
Of those losses, one hundred fifty-eight people died during transport, out of a total of two hundred fifty-five dematerializations.
The other thirteen deaths were due to the extreme conditions aboard the vessel.
Given the circumstances... I take my hat off to both of you.
But.
There is a but.
Is there not, Rodriguez?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Yes, Admiral.
The charges for dereliction of duty.
Multiple protocol violations.
And everything that goes with them.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Exactly.
You know that using transporters on humans is strictly prohibited by our constitutions.
And that this offense is punishable... by capital punishment.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
I know.
And I am ready to accept the consequences of my actions, Admiral.
Angie jerks upright.
Her fingers clench around the armrest of her chair.
Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)
Agneeeees, no!
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Commander Chen.
Please sit back down.
Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)
Grr...
Adm. Anthony Michaux
There are also other charges being brought against you, Rodriguez.
The President of the United States holds you personally responsible. She will do everything she can to obtain your conviction.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
That is her right, Admiral.
And I will submit to the judges' decision.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Do not get ahead of yourself, Rodriguez.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
I do not understand, Admiral.
The admiral stands without hurrying.
He walks around his desk, reaches the small bar cabinet, and pours himself a glass of whisky. He takes a sip, then sets the glass down with almost ceremonial care.
That calculated calm clashes violently with the tension rising inside me.
When he finally turns back, his gaze has hardened.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
I have assigned you to the USS Enterprise.
And from now on, you are its captain.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Uh...
Forgive me, Admiral, but what does that have to do with my legal cases?
And I remind you that I already refused that post in the past.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
It is very simple.
By coming here, you are now under my authority.
Our human resources are limited. And as you know, training senior officers is not done with a snap of the fingers.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Yes, but... I still do not see where you are going with this, Admiral.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
There will be no court-martial.
There will certainly be debate. Discussions. Pressure.
But in the end, you are supported by all our officers.
To them, you are a hero.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
I...
I do not know what to say, Admiral.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Say nothing.
That will not stop the American President from attempting civil lawsuits.
But let us be honest: I strongly doubt they will succeed.
Here, nearly eleven thousand people owe you their lives.
And I have a hard time seeing how they would accept your conviction without protest.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
I did not expect that kind of support.
Usually, this kind of judgment happens behind closed doors.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
On Earth, yes.
But here, we are an isolated community.
Everyone crosses paths. Everyone watches.
And under those conditions, believe me... everything eventually gets out.
Now, I am asking you.
Do you accept my offer?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
What offer, Admiral?
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Were you not following, Rodriguez?
I am talking about taking command of the Enterprise.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Ah...
That offer.
I thought you were imposing it on me.
But the Enterprise already has a captain, Admiral.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Not anymore.
All the senior officers had returned to Earth for their weekend leave.
None of them came back, for reasons you know perfectly well.
So I have to entrust the vessel to someone experienced. Immediately.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
You already know my conditions, Admiral.
They are the same as in 2015.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
That is precisely why I am offering you the post again.
I have assigned Chen to you as first officer.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Are you serious?
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Perfectly.
Do not misunderstand me: I still consider Chen a hothead.
But the world has changed.
And today, we must all learn to adapt.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Did you hear that, Angie?
We are going to command the Enterprise.
Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)
Of course I heard.
I am not deaf yet.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Stop grumbling, Chen.
I know perfectly well that you do not like me much.
Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)
As an officer, I cannot allow myself to openly criticize my superiors, Admiral.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
When we are off duty, I will invite you to have a beer at the mess.
We can talk quietly. Like adults.
Cmdr. Angie Chen (Number One)
You are asking a little too much of me, Admiral.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
As you wish, Chen.
So, Rodriguez...
Do we have a deal for the Enterprise?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Not quite, Admiral.
I still have a few requests to make.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
I am listening.
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
I want officers Corda, Savea, Flores, and Vitos to join the Enterprise's crew.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
Granted, Rodriguez.
You are free to choose your officers.
Anything else?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
No... not for now, Admiral.
I simply wanted to know what will become of the Mercator.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
The vessel is far too damaged to be repaired.
It will be dismantled. The parts that can still be used will be recycled.
Did you know its internal structure was broken in two?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
No, Admiral.
I did not know.
May we be dismissed?
Adm. Anthony Michaux
In a hurry to leave me, Rodriguez?
Capt. Agnes V. Rodriguez
Uh...
Let us say I am mostly eager to take up my new duties, Admiral.
Adm. Anthony Michaux
I understand.
But stay a little longer.
We are not finished.
