TL;DR

In Admiral Quihoui's icy office, the duel between Vulcans turns into a mental confrontation. Under the guise of a disciplinary interview, Quihoui violates T'Met's mind through a forced mind meld, probing her memories and revealing her past relationship with an influential human, a secret T'Met would have preferred to take to her grave. In a surge of willpower, the captain breaks the connection and violently repels the Admiral, triggering security's intervention. Coldly, Quihoui regains control, strips her of command and of the Lingua project, and relegates her to the temporal refugee integration service. Before leaving, T'Met realizes that the document she is ordered to sign would condemn Tarsi to judicial oblivion. She exits without a word, feigning exhaustion, but in her eyes already burns the determination not to let the Admiral win.

Story

After the members of Enterprise have been summoned one by one into the Admiral's office, the hologram informs Captain T'Met that her turn has arrived. Rising from her seat, T'Met adjusts her clothes and hair before crossing the door that separates her from her superior officer.

Upon entering, she discovers an austere room, almost empty except for a few exotic plants and an immense desk where the Admiral sits enthroned, focused on a holographic screen. The white walls are bare of decoration, reinforcing the room's rigid atmosphere. Admiral Quihoui, a Vulcan whose face is deeply marked by age, seems to be 150 or 160 years old, perhaps more. Without raising her eyes, she remains absorbed in her screen.

Capt. T'Met

Greetings, Admiral Quihoui. Captain T'Met, reporting.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

[...]

Capt. T'Met

Admiral?

After a brief moment, the Admiral switches off her screen and finally deigns to raise her eyes toward T'Met, her gaze piercing.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

What is that outfit? Do you think you are among vagrants? Your attire is not regulation!

Capt. T'Met

It is a prisoner's uniform provided by the Russians of the 21st century, Admiral.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

And that smell... Ugh. You stink of human as much as those who appeared before me this morning. How long has it been since you took a shower, Captain?

Capt. T'Met

Since July 15, 1954. Exactly 8 hours and 25 minutes ago, Admiral.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Are you attempting humor, Captain? You have spent too much time around humans. At this rate, one might believe you have become one.

Capt. T'Met

After such a long period in their company, it is possible I was slightly influenced by their behavior. But I assure you, Admiral, that I have never renounced my Vulcan origins. I meditated every evening for more than 70 years.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Hmm... I doubt that, Captain. I perceive your nervousness.

Capt. T'Met

I...

The Admiral stands and rounds her desk to approach T'Met. She extends her hand and places three fingers on the captain's face.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Do not resist...

Capt. T'Met

I...

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Your mind to my mind, my mind to yours...

Capt. T'Met

Aaaaaaah! Nooooooo!

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Do not resist... I see your greatest secrets, Captain T'Met... [...] You omitted to mention your intimate relations with those primates...

Capt. T'Met

Stop! Aaaaaaah.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

A Russian... And not just anyone! A statesman... Hmm... Fascinating... The control of your neurochemical imbalances over such a long period of isolation is an achievement no Vulcan has accomplished until now...

Capt. T'Met

Stop! You... you... are overstepping your authority, Admiral!

The pressure exerted by Admiral Quihoui becomes unbearable for T'Met, who shows signs of struggling to resist the mind meld. Suddenly, in a surge of strength, T'Met throws her arms apart, takes a deep breath, and hurls the Admiral to the far side of the room. The impact is so powerful that it is felt out in the corridor, where the Enterprise crew and Agent In'kògnytôh are waiting. He immediately enters the office, phaser drawn.

Agent In'kògnytôh (Starfleet Security)

Not another move, Captain T'Met!

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Thank you, Agent In'kògnytôh. I have the situation under control. Return to the corridor.

Agent In'kògnytôh (Starfleet Security)

Are you sure, Admiral?

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Out, immediately! I said!

Agent In'kògnytôh (Starfleet Security)

Uh, yes... Aye, Admiral.

Agent In'kògnytôh leaves the room. Admiral Quihoui straightens up and settles back into her seat while T'Met, still shaken, returns to attention.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Let us resume!

Capt. T'Met

Yes, Admiral.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

I am relieving you of command of VSS Schak'Irra. Your younger double, who has not been contaminated by Homo sapiens from a distant era, is more fit to hold that position.

Capt. T'Met

I...

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

SILENCE, CAPTAIN!!! You are fortunate I am not demoting you and sending you back to Ni'Var for reeducation! Do you have a question?

Capt. T'Met

Yes, Admiral. What am I supposed to do? What about my project with Lingua?

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

The Lingua project is also being taken from you and will be entrusted to your double. As for your new duties, you may as well retire!

Capt. T'Met

Admiral, I am still capable of serving within Starfleet and the Temporal Division.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

In view of your recent pitiful performance, I am not convinced. You brought us back a band of 21st-century vagrants, including two heads of state who are not even from our reality. Not to mention the chaos sown by your former first officer while trying to find you, at the risk of creating unmanageable paradoxes.

Capt. T'Met

Commander Tarsi acted according to what she believed was right, Admiral!

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

Commander Tarsi is an unruly Andorian who followed her primitive instincts without concern for the consequences!

Capt. T'Met

It is illogical to believe an Andorian could behave like a Vulcan, Admiral.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

After all, you might still be useful to me. I am assigning you to the Temporal Refugee Cell and placing you in charge of integrating into our society the beings you brought back to our era.

Capt. T'Met

Thank you, Admiral. Is there anything else?

The Admiral hands T'Met a padd and asks her to sign the displayed document. It is a confidentiality agreement stipulating that the events recounted by the 21st-century survivors have, officially, never happened, and that she must never reveal them to anyone under penalty of serious prosecution.

T'Met takes a long moment to read the agreement carefully, realizing that this censorship would condemn Tarsi to being unable to defend herself at her trial. She senses that the Admiral takes a certain satisfaction in this situation, but T'Met decides to keep her composure and avoid showing her disagreement.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

What is the matter? Do you refuse to sign?

Capt. T'Met

No, Admiral, but I have not slept in a week and I am having difficulty concentrating.

Adm. Quihoui (Temporal Division)

You are becoming senile, Captain! You will bring me this document when you have regained your senses. Go rest.

Capt. T'Met

Thank you, Admiral. Live long and prosper.

The Admiral does not deign to return T'Met's salute, and T'Met leaves the office feigning exhaustion, rejoining the Enterprise team waiting impatiently in the corridor.

Col. Robert Gomard (Army)

So, Captain T'Met? How did that face-to-face go?

Ens. Emilie Flores (Communications)

We heard you scream. Are you all right?

Capt. T'Met

Everything is fine. Thank you for your concern. The Admiral and I had a... productive exchange.

Agent In'kògnytôh (Starfleet Security)

Step aside and let Captain T'Met breathe! Can't you see she needs air?!

Capt. T'Met

Agent In'kògnytôh, by order of Admiral Quihoui, I am taking charge of these people. You would be so kind as to transport us directly to Earth, to the Vista Ridge district.

Agent In'kògnytôh (Starfleet Security)

Are you certain, Captain T'Met? You know, these oddballs are capable of anything.

Capt. T'Met

Are you questioning orders?

Agent In'kògnytôh (Starfleet Security)

Uh... no, Captain. I will transport you immediately.

Agent In'kògnytôh presses his combadge and transmits the order to transport nine life-forms. In an instant, they begin to dematerialize, their silhouettes fading in the beam of light.
